Bad Host, Good Host

By Nadia V. (Mama and the City)

Where to start, oh yes, I’m a terrible host.

*awkward silence*

I just happened to think while I was on the toilet – yes, I do some of my blog thinking on the toilet, sheesh. As I was saying, while on the toilet I started thinking that not many of my family or friends suggest for me to host anything at my place. I want to think is because they don’t want to create a burden on me, but I can’t help but wonder… would I be a terrible host?

I can count with my hands how many times I have hosted something at my place and the ridiculous and embarrassing number is 5.

  1. My birthday, 2008. We had mixed people on the patio and it was awkwardly okay.
  2. October, 2010.  My own baby shower. We didn’t know better, so my house was the territory to gather a big amount of gallinas women.
  3. New Years, 2011. With a new baby, some friends thought it would be good to keep the baby in a known environment.
  4. My Birthday, 2011. Family usually hosts my party, but not for that year. They still gave me cards and gifts but I felt guilty, so I proposed to host a BBQ small gathering.
  5. Baby M, 1st BDay, 2011. Since she was still small and her little friends too, I could still get away to host something at my place, so there my first official mom event.

I’m not sure if people are not happy at my gatherings. I want to think it’s because of the stupid real estate issue in Vancouver that led me to live by the city to the expense of space – there’s not enough for that many. So, the option is to host somewhere else.

But I also question my ability as a hostess. I do not posess the ‘care and worry’ for my guests. In the back of my mind all I think about is “you got hands, get it yourself, if you are thirsty, pour yourself something.” So I know I suck at it.
I even made a whole benchmarking to prove it.
[Note: feel free and check if you are a good or bad host, I won’t tell anybody]

Do you like hosting parties? Do you think you are a good host?
